Effect of PRP on musculoskeletal lesions of sports horses (Tendinopathy)
Objectives
Study in equine animal model promoted by ITRT to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of PRP when applied to tendinous injuries in an animal model.
Studies conducted at Hospital Clínico Veterinario of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona indicate that PRP can be used safely in equine species and represents a novel and valuable alternative for the treatment of tendinous injuries, since it can provide growth factors that accelerate healing, improve healing rates and decrease relapse, compared to conventional reparative medical treatments.
Methodology
The study was conducted at the Hospital Clínico Veterinario of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
7 horses with musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries were treated.
3 PRP injections were applied to the horses that were evaluated before each injection and 2 months after the last treatment. Follow-up was carried out for 1 year.
Results
All the horses presented a good clinical response, with a significant improvement of the lameness test and the flexion test.
Conclusions
Pathologies associated with the tendon are frequent in sports horses, as well as in athletes.
The obtained data in the equine species encouraged to deepen the study of the therapeutic value of PRP for the human species.
