Effect of PRP on musculoskeletal lesions of sports horses (Osteoarthritis)

Study in equine animal model promoted by ITRT to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of PRP when applied to cartilage lesions in an animal model.

The study was conducted at the Hospital Clínico Veterinario of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

7 horses with severe joint disease were treated: 4 with osteoarthritis and 2 with osteochondrosis.

3 PRP injections were applied to the horses that were evaluated before each injection and 2 months after the last treatment. Follow-up was carried out for 1 year.

All the horses presented good clinical response, with a significant improvement of the lameness exam and the flexion test.

Data obtained in equine encouraged a deeper study of the therapeutic value of PRP for the humans.

In addition, the absence of complications and the satisfactory results obtained prompted the protocol of obtaining-applying PRP, based on the one proposed by Dr. Anítua, but modified for the species, be considered for routine application at the Hospital Clínico Veterinario of the UAB, and at others which have adapted it, such as the Medicine and Zootechnology departments for equidae of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Prof. María Masri) or the Hospital Veterinario Equino de Mallorca (Dr. Isidre Abellanet).
