xerostomia (Dry mouth), commonly known as dry mouth, is a sensation that is normally perceived when the flow of saliva is reduced to approximately half its normal amount.

Among other symptoms, dry mouth causes difficulty chewing, swallowing and speaking. In addition, it predisposes to bad breath, tooth decay, tooth infections or ulcers.

Severe xerostomia (Dry mouth) is usually caused by adverse effects to treatments or medications, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy in cancer patients, and Sjögren syndrome.

Radiation-induced xerostomia (Dry mouth)

Radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of many types of oral cancer, alone or in combination with chemotherapy or surgery.

Ionising radiation, however, can cause alterations in the salivary glands, which are highly sensitive to radiation.

Radiation is one of the factors that produces the most severe xerostomia (Dry mouth). In the long term, it can end up destroying tissue and the ability to salivate.

Treatment with expanded mesenchymal stem cells for xerostomia (Dry mouth) is focused on increasing the amount of salivary flow, recuperating the ability to salivate and the pleasure of eating.

At ITRT we are applying this innovative treatment in xerostomia (Dry mouth) patients in a clinical trial, obtaining promising results in the first patients treated, which are able to be maintained in the long term.

Up to now, the processes of bone marrow harvesting and cell inoculation, after the expansion process, have shown that they are safe methodologies, without evidence of adverse effects.

Our process
Stem Cell Osteoarthritis Treatment

  • 01. Assessment

    The medical team assesses the patient and his medical history in order to offer the best solution in each case.

  • 02. Authorisation request to health authorities

    The Spanish Medicine Agency (AEMPS) authorises and controls each treatment.

  • 03. Bone marrow harvesting or adipose tissue obtaining

    Stem cells are obtained by bone marrow harvesting, specifically from the posterior area of the iliac crest bone. It can also be obtained by adipose tissue liposuction.

    Extraction is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require hospitalisation.

    It is performed by local anaesthesia and sedation, and lasts approximately 20-30 minutes.

  • 04. Isolation, culture and expansion of expanded mesenchymal stem cells in the accredited laboratory

    The aspirated sample is sent to the laboratory responsible for selecting adult stem cells, culturing and expanding them.

    For each patient, a dose is prepared according to the indication, and the maximum viability of the cells is guaranteed.

  • 05. Application of expanded mesenchymal stem cells

    Stem cells received from the laboratory are injected into the affected area.

    The application procedure is performed with or without sedation and does not require hospitalisation.

  • 06. Follow-up

    The medical team closely monitors each case to control its evolution.
